Ladies Golf Shoes and Technology
Ladies Golf Shoes and Technology
Thanks to developments in traction, ladies golf shoes have vastly improved.
Ladies golf shoes
Golf shoes have come a long way over the years, and ladies golf shoes in the future may even have computer-chip equipment inbuilt. It may sound like something from the future but it is only a matter of time judging by the latest high-tech advances in ladies golf shoes and athletic footwear in general.
Good golf shoes
A good pair of golf shoes for ladies and men is more important than you might first think. If you are playing in wet or slippery conditions, it’s vital you have good grip. It just takes one slip of the foot to ruin your drive and your game. Likewise, you want your feet to be able to breathe in hot weather, and ladies golf shoes now provide superior breathability, moisture control and comfort as well as being light-weight. Ladies may prefer to wear heels but golf shoes are a must if you’re walking across the fairways. You could be walking for up to five or six hours on an eighteen hole course.
The right golf shoes
Shoes are important to all sports – you wouldn’t go running without the right running shoes, so why should you play golf without the right golf shoes?
Metal spikes
Traditionally, ladies and men’s golf shoes had metal spikes. The first golf shoes were described as ‘miniature torture chambers.’ Originally, ladies and men’s golf shoes were heavy leather boots with thick nails to give players grip on the marshy, wet British courses. But nasty accidents did happen with these old-style shoes such as nails protruding through the thin leather soles. Golf shoes were only manufactured for men not ladies and the first golf shoes designed specifically for ladies were introduced in the 1940s.
Advances in technology
Thanks to advances in textiles and technology, ladies and men’s golf shoes are more user friendly for the golf course and for the player. Outsole and plastic-cleat features have replaced the cumbersome and destructive metal spikes.
Developments in ladies golf shoes
In the past, heavy leather was the material used in ladies golf shoes and the spikes were fastened to heavy steel plates, making them very uncomfortable, especially for ladies. The ladies golf shoes were smaller and stiffer. By the 1970s, rubber soles were used, making the shoes lighter and more comfortable and by the 1980s waterproof treated leather was introduced. In the 1990s, waterproof leather was more breathable and non-metal cleats were introduced for traction. Who knows where technology will take ladies golf shoes in the next decade.
