Welsh film star Catherine Zeta Jones dons her ladies golf shoes to raise money for charity
Welsh film star Catherine Zeta Jones recently donned her ladies golf shoes to raise money for the first dedicated children's hospital in Wales . Together with her husband, movie legend Michael Douglas, she has donated a five figure sum to the hospital, which is located in the Welsh capital of Cardiff .
Zeta Jones is a patron of the Noah's Ark Appeal, whose other famous patrons include singers Charlotte Church and Dame Shirley Bassey. Neither joined Zeta Jones in putting their best ladies golf shoes forward at the tournament in Newport , Gwent, but as natives of Cardiff , they lend their names and their wallets to the charity. The appeal aims to raise 300,000 for the hospital which opened in February 2005.
The golf tournament was televised on Sky One and Zeta Jones apparently had pre-match nerves. She is reported as saying It's such an unpredictable game I'm just praying to the golf gods'. Viewers may have tuned in for the golf, but many more undoubtedly tuned in to see the goddess in ladies golf shoes doing her stuff.
The couple were also reported to be donating their share of the proceeds from the All Star Cup tournament to the hospital charity. The money will be used to complete the teenage cancer trust unit at the hospital, which plans to treat up to 200 teenage cancer patients.
During the 2005 celebrity version of the Ryder Cup, Zeta Jones played for Europe and Michael Douglas played for the US . Zeta Jones was the only woman in the European team, and the US ladies golf shoes were filled by actress Cheryl Ladd.
The tournament, held in 2005 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport , was the brainchild of Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly better known in the UK as television presenters Ant and Dec. In 2006 it was picked up by terrestrial television channel ITV1 and the ladies donning their golf shoes were actress Jane Seymour for the US and model Jodie Kidd for the UK .
For anyone more interested in the golf than the ladies, Team Europe won both matches. In 2005 the margin was slight, just 91 to 89. In 2006 it was more of a massacre, with comedian Bruce Forsyth proving that his golf shoes would be hard to fill as he made the winning putt towards the 102 to 78 result.
