Cricket equipment – champions – Anil Kumble
Cricket equipment champions Anil Kumble
Making the best use of his cricket equipment, India 's Anil Kumble is one of the sports great champions.
India 's leading wicket taker
Championship cricketer Anil Kumble has used his cricket equipment to become one of the most feared leg-spinners in the world. On February 7th 1999, the tall bowler achieved a feat that had only been managed once before. Against arch-rivals Pakistan in the second Test at Delhi , Kumble took all the ten wickets in the second innings, at a cost of 74 runs. Although officially a leg-spinner, it is his well-concealed googly and top-spinning flipper, along with his faster balls, that are his strike weapons. Kumble is now India 's leading wicket taker in Test cricket.
500 wickets
Anil Kumble joined an exclusive club, using his cricket equipment like a champion when he trapped England tailender Steve Harmison lbw to join the select band of bowlers to claim 500 Test wickets. Though denied a hat-trick, Kumble went on to claim the last wicket of Monty Panesar to complete another five-wicket haul.
Test win in Johannesburg
Born on 17 October 1970 at Bangalore in Karnataka, championship cricketer Anil Kumble was well equipped to help India register their first-ever win in Test cricket on South African soil in Johannesburg in December 2006. A right arm leg break bowler, he has played for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy Championships and has represented Northamptonshire and Leicestershire in the County Championships . Kumble made his One Day International debut against Sri Lanka in the Australasia Cup of 1989 and his Test debut against England in 1990.
Not quite an all-rounder
Kumble, an engineer by profession is a highly focused cricketer who bowls leg breaks at a pace that is uncomfortable to batsmen, and he fields well at gully. However, critics say that his batting prevents him from being considered a champion all-rounder cricketer and that his batting equipment lets him down. Given that the same critics credit him with winning more games for India than any other bowlers, it seems churlish to focus on his lack of skills.
The Padma Shri Award
In 2005, he was awarded the Padma Shri, a civilian award from the Government of India . The Padma Shri is an award given by the Indian Government generally to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Social Service and public life. When one manages to bowl 14 overs with a broken jaw, despite doctor's advice to not do so, you know that that someone is more committed to his cricket.
